Church (Fellowship)
by Brian Drucker
Jesus said, “By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” John 13:35 (NKJV). Jesus prayed in John 17:21 concerning believers “That they all may be one.” Christians, those who believe that Jesus is King, are to love one another and be in unity. The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone. We as new believers should get together regularly with others who share our faith. You might begin by talking with whoever it was who led you to trust in Jesus. Ask them if they will teach you how to get started living for God.
If you have put your trust in Jesus, then you are called a disciple or a follower of Christ (Christ means King or Messiah). All of the followers together are called the “church.” The Greek word for church (ekklesia) means “called out ones.” God has called us to be His people on Earth. We are also called “the body of Christ” (Romans 12:5; 1Corinthians 12:27). The same way that each part of our human body needs all of the other parts, so we need to be connected with other Christians.
A teenage girl that I knew got together once a week with a Christian lady who lived across the street from her. They studied the Bible together, and the Christian lady taught her many things. After these two years, she started coming to the church that I attended, and she ended up marrying one of my friends. Both of them are still walking with Jesus today, nearly fifty years later.Hebrews 10:25 says, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another…” (NIV). Whether it is getting together regularly with a small group of Christian friends, or attending your local church every Sunday (or Saturday), we need to stay in fellowship.
Fellowship is sharing together what we have in common as followers of Jesus. It is not just Christians being together. It is being together as Christians. We can honor God by singing songs of praise to Him. Someone who knows the Bible well can teach us about God and His ways. We can pray together for each other, for the church, our nation, and the world. You might want to visit several different churches until you find one that you like. Make sure that they truly believe the Bible, and they love and honor Jesus. Try to get to know others at church. Hopefully, you can build friendships, and these people can help you to grow in your faith and knowledge of God. Friends who share our faith in God are a valuable treasure!
